Tracy Arm & Juneau

When we were there: July 29, 2009

Did you know...the Tracy Arm Fjord is named after a Civil War general named Benjamin Franklin Tracy? And did you know the Tracy Arm area covers 653,179 acres and one fifth of its area is covered in ice? Of course you knew that the twin Sawyer Glaciers are located at the end of the Tracy Arm, right?? And it goes without saying that you knew the wildlife in the area includes black and brown bears, deer, wolves, harbor seals and a variety of birds, such as arctic terns and pigeon guillemots...yep, pigeon guillemots. What the hell is a pigeon guillemot??

We didn't see much of Juneau but we did see a lot of the surrounding area. But since we are on a roll with your knowledge...I bet you knew that Juneau was named after gold prospector Joe Juneau. And while we didn't know...I'm sure you knew that Juneau has been the capital of Alaska since 1906.  (Thanks Wikipedia!)

And in case you were wondering...no, we didn't see Sarah Palin but yes, we saw her house and no, we didn't take a picture of it.
